Healthy Teeth for Tots & Teens

Tom, Greg and Bob making the burrito packets.

Waukesha Sunrise Rotary Club recently completed the “Healthy Teeth for Tots & Teens” project, a volunteer program funded through a $3000 grant approved by Rotary District 6270. The monetary portion of the grant covered material costs for 300 of the 10,000 disposable PPE dental supply packets, aka "burritos", utilized annually for children of low-income families in the Waukesha community served by Community Smiles Dental. The burrito packets each contain 9 PPE materials critical to serving patient needs during their visit, including a chair cover, toothbrush attachment, dental floss, toothpaste and other necessities.

The Waukesha Sunrise Rotary Club partnered with Girl Scout Sydney Diver from Troop 4678, in her effort to raise funds for 150 emergency Human Trafficking victim care kits, and to help her earn her Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve.  The effort benefits Human Trafficking victims and the community through information shared about warning signs, tips for prevention, statistical data, and more.  Sydney joined our meeting on May 28th to say “thank you” for helping in the success of her Human Trafficking Project.

Community Service Award - Hanneke Deeken

We presented Hanneke Deeken with our annual Community Service Award.
Pictured left to right Renee Ramirez, Hanneke Deeken an Barb Berndt
It was the lack of access to dental care for kids who were experiencing dental pain that Ms. Deeken knew she had to do something to address the problem; create a dental clinic with a focus on state insured and uninsured kids. She gathered the experts together to assess the need to make plans for a dental clinic. She led the collaboration efforts with Marquette Dental School, WCTC’s dental hygiene faculty, representatives from the HMOs, public health, and consulted with the state’s Department of Health and Human Services and many local dentists. She collected advice on systems that other communities in Wisconsin had put together to provide service, and a few models from other states as well. She coordinated several site visits to community clinics around the state. She secured substantial support from ProHealth Care to assist with fund raising and drafting a business plan. She worked tirelessly to take a dream into reality.
She has selflessly and compassionately donated hundreds of hours of her time so that disadvantaged children and adults who live in Waukesha County have access to affordable dental care.
More than 10,000 Waukesha County residents have benefited from Ms. Deeken’s dream of having a dental clinic for low income families in Waukesha County.
We donated $500.00 to a charity of Hanneke's choice, of course it was the dental clinic!

Come see Mark Johnson Author of Apprehensions & Convictions

Mark will be the guest speaker at Waukesha Sunrise Rotary Club’s Tuesday morning meeting
April 5, 2016. Waukesha Sunrise Rotary meets at 7:00 AM at The Machine Shed. Guests are welcome!
Mark Johnson grew up in Luling, Louisiana, and St. Louis, and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1974. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in English, he worked as a carpenter, cement finisher, short-order cook, bartender, cabbie, trucker, sales rep, and freelance writer (columnist and features for the ProRodeo Sports News, and Colorado Springs Sun, among others) until he stumbled into his first career with United Way.
Johnson served as campaign and public relations director for Pikes Peak United Way, executive director of United Way of Waukesha County, Wisconsin, and CEO of the United Way of Southwest Alabama. After working for United Way for over two decades and raising a career total of over $100 million for nonprofit health and human services, in 2002 Johnson chucked it all for a badge and a gun and 13 bucks an hour with the Mobile Police Department. He was 50.
As a sworn officer — six years in uniformed patrol, six years as a detective — Johnson received numerous Chief’s and Commander’s citations for meritorious arrests, and was decorated for Excellent Police Duty (three times, for initiatives resulting in a 33 percent crime reduction in targeted area, apprehension and conviction of a burglary ring responsible for 83 residential burglaries, and for solo arrests and convictions of those responsible for over $50,000 in commercial thefts), Chief’s Unit Medal (for highest local and regional case clearance), Meritorious Service Medal (exceptional service involving grave danger: the apprehension of an escaped cop killer) and the Wounded in Service Medal (for wounds received while engaged in personal combat with an armed adversary in a manner reflecting courage and honor). He also received a handful of “performance observations” and citizen complaints, usually related to inappropriate radio traffic, car wrecks and demeanor issues.

WCTC's Law Enforcement Training Center

The Morris St facility is a holistic-based training center for students and experienced law enforcement officers to practice and learn specialty skills. The facility includes rooms that are set up to mimic possible crime scenes, for example, a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room; a technology lab equipped with projectors that can project a variety of high-risk scenarios; and a mat room where officers can train how to work with uncooperative suspects. The center also lends itself to a variety of other high-level training scenarios.

A Visit from the Mayor

Posted on Apr 22, 2013

Image

Things are getting brighter. During the last two years we have made significant progress.
In 2011…

  • Our city tax levy increased by 0%.
  • The National Recreation and Park Association granted Waukesha their “Gold Medal Award.”
  • The Wisconsin Library Association designated our Public Library the “Wisconsin Library of the Year.”
  • The League of Wisconsin Municipalities and Arts Wisconsin granted us their “Arts in Community Award.”
  • In 2011 and 2012, America’s Promise Alliance ranked Waukesha one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People” in the United States.
  • With city incentives, SPX Waukesha Electric and Weldall Manufacturing expanded adding 325 new family supporting jobs to our community.
  • For 2012, our city tax levy came within .12 of 1% in meeting our 0% increase goal.

In 2012…

  • Money Magazine ranked Waukesha, as the only city in Wisconsin, to make its list of the “100 Best Places to Live” in America.
  • Gibson Guitar Corporation designated Waukesha for their nationally acclaimed “GuitarTown” community art and music project, which raised over $100,000 for local charity.
  • With city incentives, Woodman’s Food Market broke ground, with its store opening in 2013 and will add over 200 jobs to our community.
  • GE Gas Engines expanded adding over 100 new family supporting jobs to our community.
  • With city incentives, Gaco Western broke ground for expansion, which will add new technology jobs.
  • The new Kendal Lofts, Third-Ward-style residences, began construction downtown on the river.
  • ProHealth Care renovated Waukesha Memorial Hospital and opened a new Community Health Center.
  • Carroll University expanded programs, dorms and enrollment.
  • The Shoppes at Fox River expanded.
  • We opened a new Fire Station.
  • We created a new Civic Volunteer Corp, as a way for citizens to connect with and renew their community.
  • We created a new citizen-friendly city website – check it out at: www.ci.waukesha.wi.us
  • For 2013, our city tax levy came within .42 of 1% in meeting our 0% increase goal.

Looking ahead…

  • Our downtown will continue and expand our community front porch events – including Freeman Friday Night Live Music, the Farmers Market, Art Crawls, GuitarTown and more.
  • We will continue to focus on new business and investment opportunities.
  • We will progressively pursue perfection in providing a better quality of life at a more conservative price.

Our goal is for Waukesha to become the #1 rated Best Small City in America by 2018.
This is a big dream for a small city. We can do it by focusing on our sense of community. On our neighborhoods. On our
homes. On our families. On our values of empathy, responsibility and creativity. For those things to come to light, we would be
wise to focus on the good and look out for others so that others will look after us.

Things are getting brighter in Waukesha. Please join us. Together our light will shine!

Deb Delvaux and her husband Bob are moving to Florida!
Deb retires from The Women’s Center November 26 and as of December 1st will be residing in Florida.
She has been such an asset to our Club for many years. As Chair of the Club Administration she has kept our speaker schedule and made sure other annual events were covered – Changing of the Guard, Christmas Party, Pancake Festival, etc. She was very active on the Board of Directors as well. While we wish them both the best of luck as they move into this new chapter of their lives, she will truly be missed!

Waukesha Sunrise Rotarians changed up our routine a bit this week and met with the Pewaukee Rotary Club. What a great opportunity to get to know other Rotarians better! The plan is to hold joint meetings now once a month, with Pewaukee visiting us at the Country Springs on Tuesday and the Waukesha Sunrise Rotarians going to the Machine Shed on Wednesday.

Mary Beth Growny-Selene, a Rotary International Director Elect (RIDE) and a PDG, was our guest speaker. We were fortunate to have several distinguished Rotarians from District 6270 come as guests as well: DG Rick Debe, DGE Dan Christianson, DRFC Mike Slawny, PDG District Secretary Bob Hosch. Mary Beth asked what made us join Rotary and perhaps more important, what makes us stay. She pointed out that every Rotarian in the world, with the exception of one person, was ASKED to join. Do you know who that one person was? If you answered Paul Harris, you are correct. The ASK is the key!! Mary Beth also gave us further insights into the End Polio Now Campaign and how close we are to eradication.

Image
So get your ask in gear!

Thanks to Mary Beth for her program and to all who made this meeting possible!

Waukesha Sunrise Rotarian's volunteer at the Food Pantry the fourth Thursday of every month. Recognizing that all children do not have the means for a festive birthday celebration, our Club donated the time to fill birthday bags. Complete with cake, candles, plates, napkins, etc., every child under 12 has an opportunity now to make their day a little more extra special.

Doing Good in the Community

Posted by Tamie Koop on Dec 06, 2011

Waukesha Sunrise Rotarians have been out and about in the community making a difference in this 2011 holiday season.

Over $600 was collected from club Rotarians to sponsor turkeys or hams in the Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets.  This sponsorship was granted to the Waukesha Food Pantry.

ImageJust completed was the annual Bell Ringing for the Waukesha branch of the Salvation Army.  Rotarians, spouses and friends rang the familiar sounding bell of the Salvation Army for 12 shifts, over 2 days at one of the local grocery stores.

ImageAdditionally – Waukesha Sunrise Rotary adopted 3 families with 10 children in the annual Christmas Clearing Council efforts.  These three families will have a brighter holiday season.  Individual and club donations of over $600.00 made this effort possible for the 10 children to have a brighter Christmas.

Waukesha Sunrise Rotary was awarded a grant from the Rotary International District 6270, which will help fund a family birthday celebration for children.  This effort was done with the Waukesha Food Pantry as a partner.  Rotarians will be sorting the food items for the Birthday bags to make each child special on their birthday!
