Today, we recognize International Literacy Day, a global reminder that literacy is not just the ability to read and write—it’s the foundation for dignity, opportunity, and lifelong empowerment.
Over 770 million adults globally still lack basic literacy skills, two-thirds of them women. For Rotarians, this isn’t just a statistic—it’s a call to service. Literacy fuels every one of Rotary’s Areas of Focus, from peace and conflict prevention to maternal and child health. When we teach someone to read, we’re opening a door not just to information—but to a better future.
Rotary clubs around the world engage in literacy efforts—from distributing books and building libraries to launching adult education programs and digital learning access in underserved areas. We believe in the transformative power of education because we’ve seen its impact firsthand.
But literacy is evolving. In today’s world, it’s not just about reading a textbook—it’s about navigating information, using technology, and critically engaging with ideas. Rotarians are leading in this space, embracing innovation while upholding compassion.
Let us use this day to reflect, recommit, and take action. Whether it’s mentoring a child, funding educational tools, or advocating for equitable access to learning, your service matters.
Because when we improve literacy, we improve lives.
