Today is the International Day of Non-Violence.

Non-violence asks more of you than simply avoiding harm. It asks you to consider how you respond when you disagree, how you treat people whose views differ from your own, and whether your words leave room for dignity.

In community life, conflict is inevitable. Neighbors will disagree. Organizations will face tension. Families, workplaces, and communities will encounter moments when frustration rises faster than understanding.

You still have choices in those moments.

You can listen before answering. You can challenge an idea without diminishing the person who holds it. You can refuse to let anger determine the tone of a conversation. You can look for the part of a disagreement where cooperation is still possible.

These choices may seem small, but communities are shaped by them.

Service also has a role to play. Working beside someone toward a shared goal can create understanding that conversation alone sometimes cannot. Planting trees, stocking a food pantry, mentoring a student, improving a neighborhood, or helping a family in need gives people an opportunity to meet one another through common purpose.

Peace often grows through ordinary acts of respect.

Today, consider one place in your life where tension, misunderstanding, or division has taken hold. Approach it with patience, curiosity, and integrity. Listen carefully, speak thoughtfully, and look for one constructive step you can take together.
