Today is World Food Day.
You can learn a great deal about a community by asking where people get their next meal. The answer may lead you to a family kitchen, a school cafeteria, a farm, or a food pantry. Each depends on people whose work deserves your attention and respect.
If you want to help, start by listening. Ask a local food pantry what its guests need and what the pantry can use. You may discover that a predictable supply of a few staple foods helps more than an occasional collection of whatever happens to be on hand. You may also find that volunteering, delivering food, or supporting a school meal program meets a need you had not seen.
Food brings people together, but access to it cannot depend on goodwill for a single day. Farmers, food workers, volunteers, and community organizations need steady partners. You can be one by showing up, following through, and letting the people doing the work guide your contribution.
Today, choose one local group working to make food available. Ask what would help this month, and commit to something you can sustain.
