August 1st begins Membership and New Club Development Month.

Every thriving community starts with an invitation: a chair offered, a question asked, a person welcomed as though their presence truly matters.

You may already know someone who wants to contribute but has never been asked. They may be new to the neighborhood, early in their career, recently retired, or searching for a meaningful way to use their experience. They may care deeply about literacy, clean water, peace, health, or young people, yet have no idea that others nearby share that commitment.

Membership grows when you notice those people.

A welcoming club does more than explain its meetings and projects. It listens. It learns what someone cares about, respects the time they can offer, and helps them find a place where their abilities can make a difference. Belonging begins when people feel known before they are needed.

New clubs can extend that sense of belonging even further. Different schedules, interests, locations, and ways of gathering can open doors for people who might never join a traditional meeting. A club formed around a neighborhood, profession, cause, or flexible format can become a new center of service and friendship.

Growth should always be thoughtful. You strengthen a club by inviting people of integrity, curiosity, compassion, and varied experience. When more perspectives are welcomed, projects become more responsive and communities become more connected.

This month, think about the person whose ideas are missing from the table. Consider the community that could be better served by a new kind of club. Then begin with one sincere conversation.

Invite someone to take part, listen to what matters to them, and help create a place where they can serve with purpose.
