Today is International Day of the Girl Child.
When you ask a girl what she hopes to do, give her time to answer. Her interests may lead toward science, art, public service, a trade, or something she has yet to discover. She deserves the chance to explore those possibilities and the freedom to decide which are hers.
Education helps make that freedom real. So do safety, encouragement, and adults who take girls’ ideas seriously. You can see the difference in ordinary moments: a question welcomed in class, a leadership role offered, a mentor who listens before giving advice.
Your community has a part to play. You can support programs that help girls stay in school, make learning materials available, or invite young people into projects where their ideas shape the work. Ask the girls involved what they need. Their answers should guide your efforts.
Today, listen to a girl’s hopes without narrowing them. Then help open one opportunity she chooses to pursue.
