Young people are often described as the leaders of tomorrow, yet your ideas, courage, and creativity are already shaping communities today.
You see challenges with fresh eyes. You ask questions that others may have stopped asking. You recognize unfairness, imagine better systems, and bring energy to causes that need renewed attention. When you are trusted with meaningful responsibility, you do far more than participate—you help communities grow stronger, kinder, and more responsive.
That trust matters.
Supporting young people begins with listening. You deserve spaces where your experiences are taken seriously, your ideas are welcomed, and your contributions are valued. Mentorship can offer guidance, but it should also leave room for you to lead, experiment, and find your own way forward.
Community organizations have an important role to play. They can create opportunities for service, leadership, learning, and connection. They can invite young people into real decisions rather than limiting them to symbolic roles. They can also help remove barriers that prevent participation, including cost, transportation, access, and a lack of encouragement.
Intergenerational service is especially powerful. Experience and fresh perspective strengthen one another. A conversation between generations can become a project, a partnership, or a lasting source of confidence. When you are welcomed as an equal contributor, everyone benefits.
International Youth Day is a reminder to look closely at who has a seat at the table and whose voice has yet to be heard. It is also a chance to recognize the young people who are already tutoring classmates, protecting the environment, supporting neighbors, building peace, and improving their communities in countless quiet ways.
Today, listen to a young person with genuine curiosity, support an idea they care about, and help create an opportunity where their leadership can take root.
