It’s a day to remember, to educate, and to recommit to compassion.

In the 1980s and 90s, the world whispered the word AIDS. Fear and misinformation ran faster than facts. Stigma isolated those already suffering. What was needed wasn’t just medicine—it was dignity. Humanity. A hand held, not withdrawn.

Princess Diana, long before it was safe or popular, showed the world what that looked like. In 1987, she opened the UK’s first HIV/AIDS ward and was photographed shaking hands—gloveless—with patients. No lecture, no speech. Just kindness. And in doing so, she shattered myths and gave courage to millions.

Today, science has brought hope where there was once only loss. Antiretroviral treatments save lives. Prevention has become smarter and more accessible. But stigma hasn’t vanished. In too many places, silence still surrounds HIV. People still hide. Services still fall short.

This isn’t just a public health issue. It’s a human issue.

If we say we value community, inclusion, and service, then we can’t turn away from the quiet struggles of those still living with HIV/AIDS today. Whether by advocating for access to care, supporting prevention education, or simply speaking openly—we have a role to play.

Let’s honor the legacy of courage with action rooted in kindness.
