In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” As we mark International Day of Education on January 24, 2025, we reflect on the pivotal role of education in shaping our collective future, celebrating progress while acknowledging the critical challenges ahead.
Education is not just the acquisition of knowledge—it is a tool for empowerment, enabling individuals and communities to unlock opportunities for social, economic, and personal growth. Since the United Nations established this day in 2018, it has stood as a reminder of education’s role in fostering peace and sustainable development.
However, the road ahead is long. Over 258 million children and adolescents worldwide are still unable to access education, and the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the challenges by disrupting the learning paths of 1.6 billion students. The 2025 theme, “Empowering through Education: Building Resilient Societies,” calls on us to prioritize equitable, quality education to create sustainable, inclusive futures.
Education drives many of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from poverty eradication to promoting gender equality and decent work. Achieving SDG 4—inclusive and equitable quality education for all—requires urgent, innovative solutions. Digital technologies, distance learning strategies, and inclusive policies must address disparities, especially for marginalized groups.
Beyond access, education must also embrace quality learning. Holistic approaches—focusing on critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence—prepare learners to become problem-solvers and change-makers, capable of addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
As we commemorate International Day of Education, let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that education is not a privilege but a fundamental human right. Together, we can empower through education, build resilient societies, and create a sustainable world for future generations.
