January 10, 2025, marks a significant anniversary in global history. On this day in 1946, the first General Assembly of the United Nations convened, with Rotary International playing a pivotal role in shaping the principles of this vital institution. Rotary’s vision for peace, unity, and humanitarian service aligned seamlessly with the U.N.’s mission, embedding Rotary’s ideals into the foundation of global governance.

During World War II, Rotary leaders recognized the urgent need for an international organization to prevent conflict and promote cooperation. Their advocacy, planning, and global connections culminated in Rotary’s involvement at the 1945 San Francisco Conference, where they joined 41 other organizations as consultants. Rotary’s delegates were instrumental in influencing the U.N. Charter, championing values of peace, goodwill, and collaboration that continue to guide the U.N. today.

As Rotarians hosted events, consulted on policies, and contributed to shaping global dialogue, their commitment to “Service Above Self” created a lasting legacy. Today, the U.N. encompasses 193 member nations, addressing challenges like war, poverty, and inequality—issues Rotary remains committed to tackling alongside its peace initiatives.

This anniversary is an opportunity for Rotarians worldwide to reflect on our shared history and reaffirm our dedication to peace and unity. Let’s continue to build on this legacy, working together to create lasting change.
